Falkirk Wheel, Scotland
The structure stands 35 meters. Boats enter, the lock closes, the wheel rotates 180° to the top and gondola lock opens and the vessel continues on its journey though the canal system.
An engineering and architectural marval of the 21st century in Scotland
November 2007, a rainy day, I visited the much anticipated Falkirk Wheel. Connecting Edinburgh via the Union Canal and Glasgow on the Forth & Clyde Canal, some 57 kilometers. The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boatlift, a 21st century engineering & architectural marvel resulting from the Millennium Link Project, restoring Scotland’s deteriorating canal system.
